About Us

José Carlos is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) black belt and the head instructor of Kimura/Nova União Norway, based in Gjøvik, Norway. Born on December 25, 1976, in Recife, Brazil, he started his martial arts journey with judo at age 8. At 17, he transitioned to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu after meeting BJJ pioneers Daniel and Jair Lourenço, joining the Kimura/Nova União academy in Brazil.

José Carlos has had a distinguished competitive career, with notable achievements such as:

  • IBJJF European Open Champion (2017 Master 3)
  • IBJJF London International Open Champion (2013 Senior 1)
  • IBJJF European Open No-Gi Champion (2014 Master 2)
  • IBJJF World Masters Championship 3rd Place (2014 Master 2)

As a coach, José Carlos has helped produce top European athletes like Espen Mathiesen and Tommy Langaker. His coaching philosophy focuses on technical precision and adaptability, contributing to the success of many students in the BJJ community.
