About Us

Chris Haueter is an American martial artist and visual artist, best known for his pioneering role in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) outside Brazil. He holds a 6th-degree black belt and is one of the first 12 non-Brazilians to achieve this rank, known collectively as the “Dirty Dozen.” Chris is the founder of Combat Base, a school that emphasizes conceptual thinking over memorization in BJJ training. He is also an accomplished illustrator whose work blends martial philosophy with visual storytelling, often seen in jiu-jitsu-themed posters, apparel, and patches. Known for coining key BJJ terms and developing influential training principles like the “Golden Rules of Grappling,” Chris brings a unique fusion of creativity and combat expertise. A former U.S. Marine, his approach is marked by discipline, strategy, and deep philosophical reflection. Chris regularly teaches seminars worldwide, sharing his insights into both the art and mindset of BJJ. His impact on the martial arts community is long-lasting, and he remains a respected voice in both the fighting and artistic arenas.
