In the early 1900’s, the popularity of Judo had reached Brazil. Mitsuyo Maeda taught judo to Carlos Gracie during this time in Belem. Carlos had a high interest in the ground fighting aspect of Judo. This resulted in the foundations of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu being created.
