About Us

Renato Guimarães Cardoso was born on April 13, 1988, in São Paulo, Brazil. At the age of 6, he relocated to Pernambuco, where he began his martial arts journey with judo at 13, clinching a state championship as a blue belt. His transition to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) occurred in his late teens, training under Adriano Stanislau and Denis “Deninho” Mitchael in a modest 2×2 meter garage space. Cardoso earned his blue and purple belts under their guidance .

In 2009, Cardoso’s potential caught the attention of renowned coach Rodrigo Cavaca at the Brazilian National Championship. This led to a pivotal move to São Paulo, where he trained at Cavaca’s academy and received his black belt on June 15, 2012. His remarkable performances soon earned him the moniker “the crown jewel” of the Checkmat team .​

Cardoso is celebrated for his dynamic and submission-oriented style, particularly his expertise in the 50/50 guard and footlock techniques. His accolades include victories at the 2014 IBJJF World Championship and the São Paulo International Open, where he submitted all nine opponents in both his weight class and the absolute division

Currently, Cardoso competes under the Commando Group banner, focusing on Masters-level competitions. He has secured gold medals at prestigious events such as the 2024 Asia Continental Championship and the 2024 Abu Dhabi World Masters, both in the 94kg category
