About Us

Roberto “Gordo” Correa de Lima is a renowned Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) practitioner, widely credited with revolutionizing the half guard position. Born in 1971 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Gordo began training in BJJ at the age of 14, influenced by his close friendships with members of the Gracie family, including Ralph, Renzo, and Ryan Gracie. He earned his black belt in 1993 under Carlos Gracie Jr.

Gordo’s significant contribution to BJJ came after a knee injury during his time as a purple belt. To adapt his game while protecting his knee, he developed the half guard into an offensive position, a concept that was groundbreaking at the time. This innovation transformed the half guard from a defensive posture into a strategic offensive tool, influencing modern BJJ and MMA practices.

Throughout his competitive career, Gordo secured multiple titles, including World Championships in 1996 and 1997, as well as four Pan American Championships. Beyond competition, he has been a dedicated coach for over three decades, mentoring numerous champions in both BJJ and MMA, such as former UFC Champion Rafael dos Anjos and Renato “Babalu” Sobral.

Gordo currently leads the Gordo Jiu-Jitsu Academy located at 1637 Bonaventure Blvd, Weston, Florida. His academy serves as a hub for BJJ practitioners worldwide, offering training that emphasizes the techniques and philosophies he has developed over his extensive career.
