About Us
James Puopolo started training Jiu-Jitsu in January of 2005, shortly after he finished High School. James played for his high school basketball team and wanted to pick up boxing, though his father influenced him to take Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instead after watching a few of the early UFC fights.
He honed his understanding and mastery of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under legendary competitors Xande and Saulo Ribeiro and Rafael Lovato Jr. While maintaining a career as a math teacher, James managed to become one of the top grapplers in the country. He reached black belt status on October 2011, receiving his belt from Rafael Lovato Jr.
Professor James Puopolo competed internationally and has won numerous tournaments, including becoming Oregon’s first and only Black Belt World Champion at the 2013 No-Gi Worlds. At Salem-Keizer Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy, he shares his passion for the sport as he teaches students ranging from beginners to advanced practitioners.
Each class is filled with drills and techniques that have been carefully chosen to build strength, stamina, and knowledge over time.
